DRINKS MENU

ALEXANDER

BRANDY – CRÈME DE CACAO – CREAM

Kristatos sips it while for 007: Fleming describes it as a creamy, woman’s drink

AMERICANO

007’s personal recipe calls for Bitter Campari, Cinzano, a large chunk of lemon peel and, instead of soda, Perrier water: an expensive soda is the cheapest way to improve a poor drink! (Ian Fleming, «From a View a Kill»)

This is the very first cocktail that Bond drinks. It enjoys it at Royal-les-Eaux (Casino Royale, 1953) as an aperitif at the Hermitage: a sumptuous bar, a bit retro, but very smart: mahogany and brass everywhere, dark blue curtains and carpets, waiters in white jacket and golden epaulettes. Bond wants to stand out from the many who waste dry Martini, by breaking his personal rule just based on Martini. After all, it is the least offensive among the musical drinks, suitable for a warm evening in Paris at Le Fouquet (Ian Fleming «From a View a Kill»), at the Florian in Venice (Ian Fleming «Risiko») or, just after flying over Elba, at Ciampino airport before raching Istanbul (Ian Fleming «From Russia with Love») and finally at the bar of the Prince di Savoia in Milan hotel (John Person, «James Bond: the authorized biography»).

BACARDI COCKTAIL

WHITE RUM - SLUSH - LEMON JUICE

Mrs. Vesper Lynd drinks it when she meets Bond the first dazzling time in «Casino Royale» (1953).

 BLACK VELVET

 5/10 GUINNES STOUT – 5/10 CHAMPAGNE TAITTINGER

In the novel «Diamonds are forever»

BLOODY MARY

VODKA - LEMON JUICE - TOMATO JUICE - TABASCO SAUCE - WORCHESTER SAUCE - SALT - CELERY AND PEPPER

Domino Vitali defiantly orders it on her first meeting with Bond in the novel «Thunderball». Then, when the water serves it, the girl, born in Bolzano, stirs the Worchester sauce, giving Connery the chance to comment ironically that, just a few minutes earlier, she had said she would drink something light.

BULL-SHOT

VODKA – COLD CLEAR BEEF BOUILLON – WORCHESTER SAUCE – LEMON JUICE – TABASCO SAUCE

Mr. Krest, the sadistic enemy in «The Hildebrand rarity», drinks it by the gallon.

CHAMPAGNE À L’ORANGE

VERY COLD CHAMPAGNE – CURACAO – PEEL OF HALF AN ORANGE, SPIRAL CUT

007 tries it in Paris and thinks it is perfect before lunch in the novel «From a View a Kill», 1959.

CHAMPAGNE COCKTAIL

Bond instructs the barman on how to prepare this classic drink: a large shot of Brandy, no orange, just a shade of Angostura Bitters, no sugar. While the barman prepared the drink, Bond joked with him, quoting an  espionage writer on the matter: “After preparing a champagne cocktail, it is advisable to make somebody else drink it.” 007 drinks it at the Hampshire Hotel inLondon (John Gardner, «The Man from Barbarossa») and at cocktail party on the Massaciuccoli Lake, near Pisa (John Gardner, «Cold»).

CRÈ DE MENTHE FRAPPÈ

CRÈME DE MENTHE – CRUSSHED ICE – ONE GLACE CHERRY

Emilio Largo, modern pirate and charming adventurer drinks it in his white shark coat. He is Bond’s enemy in «Thunderball». In Bond’s opinion he deserves to be killed for the drink alone!

DAIQUIRI

6/10 WHITE RUM – 3/10 FRESH LIME JUICE – ONE TEASPOON OF ICING SUGAR – ICE CUBES – A SLICE OF LIME.

Ruby, one of the 10 girls from all over Great Britain under therapy in the strange Blofeld’s clinic, drinks it at 10000 feet in the Piz Gloria bar, in Engadina, near St. Moritz. The bar looks like a Tyrolean “Stube!” (Ian Fleming, «On Her Majesty’s Secret Service»).

DRY MARTINI COCKTAIL – SHAKEN NOT STIRRED!

8/10 GORDON’S GIN – 2/10 DRY MARTINI, SHAKE AND POUR INTO AN ICE-COLD COCKTAIL GLASS, DECORATE WITH A GREEN OLIVE («THUNDERBALL») OR WITH A TWIST OF LEMON («DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER»)

One of the cocktails that consecrated the myth. Often enjoyed with his friend Felix Leiter (a CIA agent): at the King Cole Bar, in Harlem in the novel «Live and Let Die»; at Sardi’s in New York in «Diamonds are forever»; at the Pavillon in Saratoga waiting for a Maine lobster with melted butter; in the Carribbeans, at the Royale Bahamian Hotel, where Leiter jokes about the Barman’s bank account judging from the doses he serves, in «Thunderball». Bond also drinks it alone, like at Tiara’s in Las Vegas. In the movies it appears many times: on Goldfinger’s private jet, etc., etc.

GLÜWEIN

RED WINE – LEMON – SUGAR – A CINNAMON STICK

Roger Moore sips it in Cortina d’Ampezzo with Kristatos and the Italian secret agent Ferrara («For your eyes only», 1981).

IRISH COFFEE

ONE TEASPOON SUGAR – IRISH WHISKEY -  A SMALL CUP OF COFFEE – CREAM  WARM UP SUGAR, WHISKEY AND COFFEE AND POUR INTO A PARIS GOBLET, WHIP THE CREAM, THEN POUR IT OVER A SPOON SO THAT IT FLOATS ON TOP OF THE DRINK.

Bond enjoys a glass at the restaurant of the restaurant of the Shannon Airport in Ireland during a forced technical stop, in «Diamonds are forever».

KYR ROYAL

VERY COLD CHAMPAGNE BRUT AND CRÈME DE CASSIS

The secret agent on Her Majesty’s Service drinks it in Paris before dinner with Tylyn Mignonne, Bond Girl in «Never Dream of Dying» by Raymond Benson.

 MARGARITA

LIME JUICE – COINTREAU – TEQUILA BLANCO – SALT

Upon his arrival in AustinTexas, in «In Facts of Death» by Raymond Benson, Bond is invited by Felix Leiter for a genuine Margarita-based Tex-Mex dinner. Initially 007 is a bit puzzled, but then the British Agent enjoyed the Margarita prepared by «Chuy’s» barman so much that, a few minutes later, he ordered two more to pick up an attractive girl sitting at the bar. (Raymond Benson - «The Facts of Death», 1998).

MOJITO

LIME JUICE – SUGAR – FRESH MINT – WHITE RUM – SODA – CRUSHED ICE

The best way to make friends with Halle Berry. The national Cuban drink is ordered by the spy at a bar on the famous island in the last movie: «Die Another Day».

MINT-JULEP

MINT LEAVES – ONE SUGAR LUMP – WATER – BOURBON – CRUSHED ICE.

MIXED MINT, SUGAR AND WATER IN A LARGE TUMBLER – ADD ICE AND BOURBON – REMOVE THE MINT LEAVES AND DECORATE WITH A TWING OF FRESH MINT.

Offered by Goldfinger, in the 1963 movies, to Connery, Bond replies that he does not like it too sweet. The cocktail is also drunk by 007 in Garden’s novel «For Special Services».

NEGRONI

GORDON’S GIN – BITTER CAMPARI – RED MARTINI AND HALF AN ORANGE SEGMENT

Bond drinks it in Rome, at the bar of the Excelsior Hotel, while waiting for the unreliable Kristatos and spaghetti with pesto: an unbelievable mix of basil, garlic and pine nuts (Ian Fleming, «Risiko» 1960).

OLD FASHIONED

ONE SUGAR LUMP – A FEW DROPS AF ANGOSTURA BITTERS – BOURBON WHISKEY – SODA – CRUSHED ICE – HALF AN ORANGE SEGMENT – ONE COCKTAIL CHERRY

Typical drink of the Caribbean missions in Ian Fleming novels, «Live and let die» and «Thunderball». Bond thinks it helps him to sleep and prefers it with Old Grand-Dad Bourbon, chicken sandwiches and Sanka decaf coffee.

PINK GIN

ICED GIN AND ANGOSTURA BITTERS

James Bond orders this drink, from the noble Martini family, with a large dose of bitters and Beefeater’s Gin in «The Man with the Golden Gun», a novel published after Ian Fleming’s death. The writer seems to be particularly fond of this cocktail, as does another of his characters: the sad Major Dexter Smythe in the short story «Octopussy».

RUM COLLINS

2/6 RUM – 1/6 LEMON JUICE – 3/6 SODA WATER

PREPARE IN A LARGE GLASS WITH A COCKTAIL CHERRY AND A SLICE OF LEMON.

In «Thunderball» Emilio Largo (played by Adolfo Celi) wearing a black blindfold, offered Connery-Bond the drink. He accepted without asking him to change the recipe.

SAZERAC

IN THE MIXING GLASS: LIQUID SUGAR – RYE WHISKEY – A SHOT OF PERNOD – A SHOT OF PEYCHAUD – BITTERS – TWIST OF LEMON

Felix Leiter recommends it to 007 in the movie «Live and Let Live».

SCREWDRIVER

4/10 VODKA AND 6/10 ORANGE JUICE

Flicka von Grusse orders it at the Schloss Drache, the castle of the dangerous Dragonpol on the Rhein, not far from Andernach, in Germany (John Gardner, «Never send flowers», 1993). Flicka is one of the most important girls in the 16 novels written byGardner; actually, she appears in 3 stories and eventually shares Bond’s London flat in a leafy square near King’s Road, Chelsea

STINGER

7/10 COGNAC (FLEMING SAYS HENNESSY THREE STAR) – 3/10 CRÈME DE MENTHE BLANCHE SHAKE AND STRAIN INTO THE COCKTAIL GLASS.

Tiffany Case orders this cocktail in «Diamonds are forever» and Bond follows her. The ensuning love story is intense, so much so that even M. gets to know about it and, at the beginning of the next novel, he asks Bond what has happened to that girl. Still with Tiffany, Bonds orders a couple of Stingers on the Queen Elizabeth.

VESPER

7/10 GORDON’S GIN – 3/10 VODKA – A BIT OF KINA LILLET BLANC, SHAKE AND SERVE IN A LARGE CHAMPAGNEGOBLET ADDING LEMON PEEL

The first Bond recipe, created ex novo for the debut novel «Casino Royale», to celebrate the acquaintance with the CIA agent Felix Leiter, who later becomes Bond’s best friend. The original name was Molotov, in memory of the two Bulgarians who blew up with the bomb meant for 007. It is later changed to be dedicated to the beauty of the first Bond girl, Vesper Lynd (a borrowed name, which evokes the charms of dusk).

VODKA MARTINI SHAKEN, NOT STIRED!

8/10 VODKA – 2/10 DRY MARTINI, SHAKE AND DTRAIN INTO THE ICE-COLD GOBLET

007’s top of the cocktails. This id Bond’s request to Dr. No’s attendants in the dinning-room on Crab-Key Island. The result is the “best Vodka Martini” ever drunk (Ian Fleming, «Dr.No», 1958). In the movie «You only live twice» there is a change in Bond’s recipe which will go down in history: Dikko Andersen offers Bond a Vodka-Martini “Stirred not shaken”! Well, Bond, showing great self-control, accepts without turning a hair. May be to give evidence of 007’s politeness, or to play with the audience or – why not? – simply because of a mistake in the script. Roger Moore drinks Vodka Martini in just three movies out of seven. Timothy Dalton drinks as many as Moore did in total in his first movie alone (and we won’t even mention the second).

077’s VODKA

“When M. poured him a large vodka from the frosted carafe Bond took a pinch of black pepper and dropped it onto the surface of the vodka. The pepper slowly settled to the bottom of the glass leaving a few grains on surface which Bond dabbed up with the tip of finger. Then he threw back the cold liquor and put down his glass, with the dregs of the pepper in the bottom, on the table. M. gave him a quizzical, some what ironic glance. – It’s a trick the Russian taught me that time you attached me to the Embassy in Moscow”, apologized Bond. “There’s often quite a lot of fusel oil on the surface of this stuff - at least there used to be when it was badly distilled. Poisonus. In Russia, where you get a lot of bath-tub liquor, it’s an understood thing to sprinkle a little pepper in your glass. It takes the fusel oil to the bottom. I got to like the taste and now it’s habit. But I shouldn’t have insulted the club Wolfschmidt, - he added with a grin” (Ian Fleming, «Moonraker», 1955)
